Project Description
Master Bathroom Renovation | New Rochelle, NY
What began as a plan for a simple master bathroom update quickly evolved into something far more intentional. This master bathroom remodel in New Rochelle, NY was reimagined as a private, spa-like retreat — a space designed to shut out the noise of the day and offer a sense of calm the moment you step inside.
The project transformed a dated layout through a full gut renovation that included strategic reconfiguration of the space, expanded vanity storage, and the relocation of the toilet to create better flow and privacy. A steam shower crowned with a skylight now fills the room with natural light, while a soaking tub with a waterfall edge anchors the space as a place to truly unwind. Thoughtful design choices, including flexible pocket doors, allow the bathroom to feel open when desired and private when needed — striking a balance between luxury, comfort, and everyday livability.
Rethinking the Layout for Better Flow
To achieve this transformation, the layout needed a complete rethink. One of the most impactful changes was relocating the toilet from its original position and repurposing an adjacent closet to create a dedicated, more discreet water closet. This single move dramatically improved circulation and opened up access to what had once been a tight, outdated shower area (as seen in the original walkthrough video).
With the layout freed up, we were able to expand the vanity, introducing much-needed storage while improving balance and symmetry throughout the space.
From Dark & Dated to Light-Filled and Restorative
The original steam shower had become dark, worn, and compromised by an ongoing leak. The solution was a full reset — the entire bathroom was stripped down to the studs and rebuilt from the ground up.
One of the homeowner’s top requests was a skylight above the shower, and it became a defining feature of the space. Natural light now floods the steam shower, transforming it into a place you actually want to linger. There’s something uniquely grounding about showering beneath an open sky — it turned a functional space into an experience.
Privacy Without Sacrificing Openness
Designing a bathroom that feels open yet adaptable required some creative problem-solving. Strategic use of pocket doors allows areas to be closed off when privacy is needed, while still maintaining an open, seamless feel the rest of the time.
To make this work, we carefully intersected portions of the hallway and an adjacent room — all executed so subtly that the changes are nearly invisible. The result is a bathroom that feels expansive, flexible, and intuitive.
Finishing Details That Elevate the Experience
The final layer was all about the details:
-
Electrical towel warmer
-
Pull-out hair and accessory organizers
-
Double handheld shower systems
-
Double swing glass shower doors
-
A waterfall edge detail wrapping the soaking tub
-
Large-format tile throughout for a clean, modern finish
Every element was selected to support both function and atmosphere, tying the entire space together into one cohesive retreat.
