A Carefully Executed Transformation of a 1958 Cape
What began as a simple kitchen remodel evolved into a full-home renovation of a 1958 Cape-style house located in a quiet residential neighborhood. This project demonstrates how careful planning, technical problem-solving, and disciplined execution can transform a dated home into a functional, comfortable space tailored to modern family living.
The Vision: From Outdated to Functional
When we first met the homeowners, they had recently purchased the property and completed minor updates—painting and refreshing the interiors—to make the home livable. It quickly became clear, however, that the home required more than surface improvements, particularly in the kitchen.
As a family that enjoys cooking, entertaining, and spending time together, they wanted a kitchen that wasn’t just functional, but central to how the home was used. The existing layout made that difficult. Reaching the kitchen required passing through the dining room and then through a narrow doorway, creating separation and interrupting flow.
The homeowners envisioned an open layout that felt connected while still remaining comfortable and practical. They had consulted with other contractors, but the proposed solutions didn’t fully address how the space needed to function day to day. Our role was to reassess the layout and develop a plan that balanced openness, structure, and long-term usability.
As with many homes in Pelham Manor, the original layout reflected an earlier era and required careful reconfiguration to support modern family living.
The Challenge: Balancing Openness and Structure
Our objective was to create a home that felt open but still clearly defined—updated without losing its character—and to do so within the home’s existing footprint. The homeowners entrusted us with their largest investment, and every decision was approached with durability, safety, and long-term value in mind.
Kitchen Remodel
Opening Up the Space
We removed the walls separating the kitchen and dining room to establish a more natural flow between spaces. During demolition, we uncovered a structural issue caused by a previous upstairs addition: a load-bearing wall had been placed incorrectly, leaving joists unsupported.
Working closely with our architect and structural engineer, we installed a new metal beam and extended the joists to properly support the structure. The beam was concealed within the ceiling to preserve the clean, open look the homeowners wanted, while ensuring the home was structurally sound.
Maximizing Natural Light
The home originally felt dark, with limited window placement. In the kitchen, we replaced an outdated window facing the neighboring property with a picture casement window overlooking the backyard. An existing exterior door was converted into a large French door leading to the porch, significantly improving natural light and strengthening the connection to the outdoors.
Reimagining the Kitchen Layout
To avoid a top-heavy appearance, we raised the upper cabinets to 42 inches and eliminated crown molding. The refrigerator was recessed between two pantries, creating a hidden alcove that increased storage while maintaining visual openness.
These changes resulted in a kitchen that feels balanced, functional, and well-suited for both everyday use and entertaining.
Before making design decisions, we evaluate layout, structure, and how the space actually functions.

Living Room Transformation
Above the living room, a previously closed-off attic space was removed, exposing the rafters and allowing for a vaulted ceiling that added height and architectural interest.
We also removed the wall near the staircase to open sightlines into the living room, creating a stronger visual connection between spaces. Rustic pine beams, decorative trusses, and an extended fireplace wall—finished in a contrasting color—were introduced to define the room and add warmth without overwhelming it.
These updates transformed the living room into a central gathering space that feels open, inviting, and intentionally connected to the rest of the home.
Bathroom Remodel: Creating Value Through Foresight
Originally, the home had a single bathroom shared by the entire household—an arrangement that limited both daily function and long-term value. Rather than simply updating finishes, we approached the space with a broader perspective: how could this square footage work harder for both the family and the home itself?
By dividing the existing bathroom, we created a true primary suite with private bathroom access and additional closet storage, while still preserving a full three-piece bathroom accessible from the hallway. This single decision significantly improved daily functionality while materially increasing the home’s overall value.
This is where careful execution matters most. Adding a second bathroom on the same floor and establishing a primary suite doesn’t just enhance comfort—it strengthens resale appeal and helps ensure a more certain return on investment. Achieving this within the existing footprint required creative problem-solving, precise planning, and disciplined execution.
This type of foresight—seeing opportunity where others see limitation—is the approach we bring to every project. If you’re considering just a bathroom remodel in Pelham Manor, NY, you can learn more about our bathroom remodeling services in Westchester County and how our design-build process works.
This full home remodel in Pelham Manor included both a kitchen remodel and bathroom updates, carefully planned to improve flow, structure, and everyday usability. As part of our broader work across Westchester County, projects like this demonstrate how thoughtful design and construction can transform an older home into a functional, modern living space.
Smart Use of Space
In a 1,683-square-foot home, efficient use of space was essential. We closed off the existing hallway and added two large closets, effectively dividing the home into two distinct wings.
This approach added meaningful storage while improving privacy and separation between the primary suite and shared living areas.
The Finishing Touches
To complete the renovation, we installed new flooring throughout the home, applied fresh paint, and incorporated updated lighting fixtures. Custom metal handrails and black hardware paired with frosted glass doors provided a cohesive, contemporary finish that unified the home.
A Home Reimagined
Once dated and fragmented, this 1958 Cape was carefully brought into the present through deliberate planning and precise execution. The result is a home that functions better, lives more comfortably, and supports the needs of a growing family—without losing its original character.
Projects like this reflect how careful planning and coordinated kitchen, living, and bathroom renovations can significantly improve both how a home functions and what it’s worth.
